Pupils in Medway have been visiting local farms and hosting farmers markets to learn where food comes from.
Kingfisher Primary School in Chatham, who hold a Food for Life Award, visited Mockbeggar Farm to learn about soft fruit farming and make links to curriculum topics such as life cycles and history.
Following the visit, pupils shared their new knowledge with the community by hosting a farmers market. They used their maths and business skills to create, price and sell veg bundles.
Local producers, including Halling Honey and Campbell’s Chutneys, all sold their products at the market and gave pupils insight into the local food system by sharing their knowledge on entrepreneurship and local supply chains.

Alex Myatt, Farm Manager, Mockbeggar Farm, said: “To be able to bring children to the farm to actually show them what a strawberry plant is, what it is… each berry is picked by hand, which none of them realised. They were all blown away by that! It’s giving the children the opportunity to actually see where their food’s come from and making them also see there is an opportunity to work in the industry.”
A Kingfisher Primary School pupil shared: “The raspberries were really good and juicy… it’s important to come because it’s very good to know where the local food comes from.”
